First Day Hikes

Insider Tips & Inspiration

Start the year off in the fresh air with stunning views on a First Day Hike! Every year the state parks host First Day Hike events where they encourage folks near and far to gather on the trail and start the new year in the gorgeous outdoors. This is the perfect socially distant way to enjoy our natural assets and, although things are looking a little different here for 2021, both Letchworth State Park and the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park have great hiking events to take part in.

Letchworth State Park

At Letchworth you have the choice of four different hikes: 10am & 1pm hikes at both the north end and south end of the park. There is a limit to the capacity of these groups, so be sure you register at the Humphrey Nature Center. The Friends of Letchworth State Park will be at the end of each hike handing out paper bags with individually wrapped snacks and refreshments.

Visitors are also welcome to partake in their own self guided hike; be sure to follow along on Facebook for the most updated information on these events!

Genesee Valley Greenway State Park

Join one of three First Day Events on the Greenway offered by the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park (GVGSP).

Scottsville First Day Walk/Hike/Ride
Try out the recently reopened section of the Genesee Valley Greenway State Park in Scottsville, just 10 miles south of downtown Rochester! From 8:00am-3:00pm, the Artisan Coffeehouse of Scottsville will be open for cocoa, breakfast sandwiches, hot soup, subs and drinks (2 Main St, just 700ft from the Canawaugus Park Trailhead). Stop by the coffeehouse between 11am-2pm for free s’mores, a quick warm-up around the fire pit, and restrooms.

Cuba First Day Hike - Meet Between 12 - 3pm
Enjoy a relaxing, easy trail and spectacular views along Griffin and Oil Creeks. 2.5 miles round trip. Meet at the trail head on Bull St (42.216592, -78.283329) for a self-guided hike. Between the hours of 12:00-3:00pm, interpreter extraordinaire Michael Landowski will be on site for Q&A. Also, during that timeframe, the Palmer Opera House will hand out snack bags both at the trail head and at the Palmer (12 Main St, 1/2 mile from the trail head), a great place to head for warmth and restrooms.

Hinsdale First Day Walk/Hike - 9 am
Ring in the New Year with an outdoor show & tell presentation by the Hinsdale Historical Society followed by an easy, yet invigorating 2-mile walk, along a very secluded section of the Greenway heading east along Oil Creek. Meet at Hinsdale United Methodist Church, Main St. (42.167278, -78.387766) at 9 am. Parking is available. A prepackaged beverage and snack will be on hand, and restrooms are available inside the church.
